Summary of Alabama laws regarding motor-driven-cycles.

It's important to remember that even though motorized bicycles are currently undefined and more or less in a "grey area" within the Alabama Code, there are certain rules that still apply to motorbicycle operators that should be followed.

The only actual mention of motorized bicycles in the Alabama Code is as follows: (From Alabama Code - Section 32-1-1.1: DEFINITIONS)

(34) MOTOR-DRIVEN CYCLE. Every motorcycle, including every motor scooter, with a motor which produces not to exceed five brake horsepower nor to exceed 150 cubic centimeter engine displacement, and weighs less than 200 pounds fully equipped, and every bicycle with motor attached.

From this statement one can assume that a motorized bicyclist is required to follow all of the laws govorning motor-driven cycles as closely as possible.

So... what are those laws exactly? I am not an authority figure on laws or the interpretation of law and so my word should not be used above one who is. For your convenience however, I will do my best to share here a summary of what I have read regarding motor-driven cycles.

Other than the obvious traffic laws, such as obeying all traffic signals:

1. The Director of Public Safety has the authority to revoke the license of anyone convicted of violating the laws regarding MDCs.

2. The bike must weigh less than 200 pounds.

3. The engine must have 5 horsepower or less and cannot be larger than 150cc.

4. The bike must have at least one working brake that is able to stop the bike safely at all times.

5. You must wear closed-toe shoes and a qualified helmet while riding a MDC.

6. The bike must have at least 1 (but not more than 2) headlights that are visible from 500 feet at night.

  • The light(s) must be mounted between 24 and 54 inches above the ground.

  • The lights must point straight forward and not shine into the eyes of drivers in front of you.

7. The bike must have at least 1 tail light visible from 500 feet at night.

  • The tail light(s) to be mounted at a height between 20 and 60 inches.

8. You are required to have a motorcycle endorsement on your driver's license. (or a Motor-Driven Cycle license if you are 14 or 15 years old.)

9. You are not allowed to ride on the beaches or the sand dunes of the Gulf coast.

10. Every parent of a child who drives a MDC must not knowingly allow their child to break the law.
